Andy Kelly enjoyed the 'evocative writing and compelling exploration' in Sunless Sea's alpha version so much that he used those exact words in his review of the Early Access version on Steam.

Map

All ports appear in every single playthrough; however, from what I have heard, some island formations that can't be docked at may not appear in every playthrough. What's shuffled in each playthrough isn't actually the islands themselves, but rather the 36 tiles of the map - each tile may contain more than one island, and the entire western and southern coasts are always fixed. Certain tiles are always somewhere in the far north (but their longitude randomized), or always in the far east (but their latitude randomized). The rest can be anywhere. The west edge is alwyas locked.

The south edge is either locked or -mostly- locked. The north and eastern edges shuffle some (Irem is always the northeast corner, and Kingeater's is always the southeast corner).Past that, the Zee is divided up into a few chunks which shuffle in some tiles. Most of them have one tile that has a few 'generic' options, as well. The ports are, so far as I can tell, all always there, and always in their chunk, but not necessarily in the same place unless you chose that legacy.

Here is a map with the section borders drawn in. It's from the wiki. The left edge, the bottom edge, ant the top right corner are constant. The rest shuffle withing their section. For example, Port Cecil will never be closer to London than Pigmore Island, but you don't know if you will reach the Sea of Lilies or Godfall first. If you get the Cartogropher's Legacy, the map stays the same for the next captain, but you lose discovery bonuses.

If you don't get the Cartographer's Legacy, tiles move around and you get Fragments for finding islands.

For anyone stumbling over this guide late: The method to get incredible rich described in this guide (Step 12.2) was nerfed through a patch. The guidelines are still very much worth reading to get into the game and have a good start, but you will have to find another way to make tens of thousands of Echoes.Ahoy there, matey! So you want a good start and get rich in Echoes, ay? Here's how in 13 easy steps! Choose your past: Urchin or PoetUrchin gives you extra; useful for sneaking by enemies to avoid a fight (this saves precious Fuel!).Poet gives your which lowers the number of fragments you need to gain a (which you use to upgrade Veils if you chose Poet). Both are very useful in mission decisions. Poet may have a slight advantage since Pages is the only stat that is hard to raise later in the game. Ambition: WhateverFirst you get the Echoes, then you get rich/live a full life/find your father's bones. To-Do: Sell the book, read the news, speak to the Admiral, take tomb passengers and buy all the Mushroom Wine you canSell the green Beginner's Guide ( 'Advice for Captains') first.

It gives you 50e, a good start. After that you want to go to and read the news. You'll get which are free and useful later.Go back to Fallen London and visit to ask if there's anything in particular they need. This gives you (very broad) directions to a port where you can get which you can turn in at the Admirals when you visit Fallen London again and net you 150e.Go back to the city and accept taking a to.Excellent! Now you want to visit the Shops and buy all the you can from the. Every Cask gives you a profit of 2e in Venderbight - not much but something to get you started.

Full sails ahead! You're (almost) ready to go! Three basic but important Zailing tips:.When you leave a Port you travel at Speed 1.

Press 'W' to change to Speed 2. Higher Fuel consumption, but you get there faster. This only works if you have at least half your Crew Capacity.'

L' turns your lights on and off. Lights off means (a) less Fuel consumption, (b) you are less likely to be spotted by enemies, (c) enemies lose sight of you faster. but also (d) your rises much faster (more on that later) and (e) the distance at which you discover locations (to gain ) suffers immensely. More information of how the mechanics work can be found in ' guide.' Z' sends out your Zee bat.

It will scout the region around you (farther than you can see) and inform you of Ports and locations. When you click the discovery message on the bottom left of the GUI the position will be noted in your map ('M').Leave Fallen London and go straight North as soon as possible (2 buoys point the way). Pretty soon you'll see on your starbord (right side), the first foreign Port you want to visit. There may be a nearby which might try to attack you. You can take a hit or two and an early fight just wastes Fuel.

(more on Zee fights later)During your travels there is a chance of random events occurring. This would be unusual in the first few minutes of the game, but possible. If so, go with your guts. Captain's first Tea PartyFirst thing you do whenever you visit a Port (first visit or later ones) is create a. The first Port Report always gives you 1x Fuel, some Echoes and an when you inform the Admiral in Fallen London. Every second and later ones 1x Fuel and some more Echoes normally. After that introduce yourself to the Sisters. If you have (more on that later) they immediately invite you to sit with them (it also means you dawdled on your way;)).Otherwise you use your Recent News to get invited. You get the choice which Sister you want to talk to.

Choose Cynthia, the oldest, mysterious one. You will get, your is diminished and - most importantly - you get!Fantastic! Nothing left to do but leave the Port.

Passage to VenderbightLeave Hunter's Keep and sail straight (North).During the travel you may encounter other Pirate Vessels, small Zee monsters or Zee bats. You can 2-shot the Zee bats and gather their corpses for 1x Supplies if you want.Venderbight will appear on the left-hand shore after some time. Welcome to the Tomb-ColoniesYou have arrived in Venderbight!

Very good! The Tomb-Colonist may speak up when you reach the Port (or maybe he already did something during your travel?). Don't be alarmed - this just means you got a special occurrence. Sometimes your payment is delayed, sometimes it is multiplied. Take it as it is.

With that out of the way.First thing to do? Port Report! After that you can sell all your Mushroom Wine for the sweet profit and (if you still have them) sell your Tomb-Colonist(s) at the Shops. All done? Explore the Port and enjoy the bizarre setting. This completes the very guided first start which sets you up nicely for a successful exploration of the Unter Zee. I encourage you to just stop reading here and discover on your own, if you haven't done that already. If you feel like you really need more help you can read the following Advanced Zee tips. But I need more money.I promised you riches, but you're still stuck with measely 250e! You want more! It's a long way to wealth and the road is paved with Fuel problems and Cannibalism. The next step is getting to the.

These two giant statues can be found somewhere around the middle of the map and they are the first step to make 1,000e+.Alas! Before you leave. Advanced Zee tips:.Buy enough Supplies and Fuel, preferably in Fallen London where it is cheap. I advise you to buy 2/1 (2x Fuel for every 1x Supply). The consumption rate may be closer to 2.5/1, but having no Fuel but Supplies gives you the 50/50 chance to use one Supply as Fuel. Other way around gets you Cannibalism.Sail with a goal. Mark of the ninja download. Squiggly-lining wastes Fuel and can be your downfall, especially early game.

Choose your destination ( Zee bat helps) and try to there in as straight as a line as possible.Avoid fighting. It takes time which use up Fuel and Supplies. If you have to fight: Try to get behind your enemy and stay in his blind spot (the same one your ship has). Most ships won't be able to load their weapons this way, leaving you to shoot them without taking hull damage.Watch your Terror: Everything above 70 is critical. If it reaches 100 you will probably die.Know your limits: Always plan ahead. If you find yourself in the middle of the map with 7x Fuel and 4x Supplies you want to head home straight away, preferably with your lights off as long as possible - if you are not sure of a Port where you can replenish your needs. Your Hold is very limited with the basic ship (40 minus Fuel and Supplies).

If you burden too much throughout a mission you will have to dump cargo. If your Terror is high, don't do risky challenges. Remember: 100 is in most cases deadly.

Your terror will be reduced to 50 if you come home with Something awaits you. You can also slightly reduce it in Bars and Inns in foreign Ports.Use lights off wisely: Your Terror will increase way faster, but you can reduce it by traveling near to land and through the light circles of buoys. Turn it off when enemies are near.Check your map: It's always good to know where you are and planning routes when you discovered enough is vital.Respect your environment: If you decide to attack a Zee monster or other ships check its Hull before. If it has a high Hull it will probably deal an equally high amount of damage.Consider manually saving in ports: You lose your token, but nothing is worse than dying of one bad decision and leave a game you put many hours into with nothing.Crew is good: Always make sure to have at least half your Crew Capacity to travel at Full Speed. An even number is better than an odd, because Supplies are used more efficiently. Also, when push comes to shove and you are stranded with no Supplies your Crew can lend a hand (and legs and arms, haha!).Don't refuse or disappoint the.

Except if you want to play as a legal saint (haha, good luck with that). Otherwise, having an illegal connection in Fallen London is very useful. His 'proposals' must be dealt with after you accept them, before your next return home.Lastly a useful FYI: Something awaits you is a quality you get when you traveled the Zee long enough. It will unlock special options in most Ports. As soon as you get it you will hear the sound of a ringing bell and.Now that we have this covered it's time to make some Echoes! If you remember, we sailed some way North to get to Venderbight so in order to get to the middle of the map we should head South- East (mostly East; South only to about Fallen London's latitude).Check your map ('M') and send your bat out ('Z') frequently on your way there. Visit all the Ports you find on your way for Fuel and Echoes when you return to Fallen London. It may be several trips before your Zee bat finally points out the Salt Lions to you, but Port Reports should keep your Fuel and Supplies costs covered.

Don't give up! Found them!Well done! First thing you do now is check your Hold.

You need a minimum free space of 20 and 200e.If you lack the free space or the Echoes, but have enough Fuel and Supplies you can still partly do 9.1. Otherwise explore the surroundings and hand in more Port Reports. 9.1 But wait! There's more!Every shipment from the Salt Lions profits you 300e, but what if I told you with almost the same trip you could make an extra 120e?More often than not (read: Don't quote me on this) the island can be found slightly east to the Salt Lions.

There you can pick up Clay Men (they take up 6 spaces of your hold) which sell in Fallen London for another 120e.If you get to the Polythreme with 26 free slots and travel back over the Salt Lions you can make effectively 420e per trip! While we're at it: East to the Salt Lions you can also find Khan's Settlement. While the main city is useless at the beginning since they are highly suspicious of foreigners and any 'acceptance' ('bribary') is pretty expensive, their black market will be our destination later and sells Fuel and Supplies at an okay-ish price. Khan's Shadow is alway South-East to the main city. Salty businessArriving with enough free Hold and Echoes you have the option to carry to Fallen London.

You will have to pay 200e for 20 Sphinxstones, but those will sell for 500e back home. 500e - 200e = 300e profit! (+120e if you decided to do 9.1 as well). You may also remember that you got Salt's Attention from Cynthia.

You can use it to perform Salt's Rites to gain 7x Terror, but also 1x which nets you 250e at Fallen London's. You have to have Something awaits you for it though, so don't Visit the Unmakers beforehand.Follow this process multiple times, until.

Where are my Sphinxstones?!After multiple shipments the quest will come to an end. Follow the way you like and earn your final payment.

If you did Port Reports and some Missions on the way you should have 2,000e and multiple which can be used to gain Fuel in exchange.I'm rich! No, apperantly not. If you are looking for a new ship you will see that the first useful ones begin at 7,000e and buying an Elegant Townhouse costs 1,000e and a Zeeside Mansion incredibly 10,000e!How can you ever amass so much? A Warning:In the following you learn how to make massive amounts of Echoes, but for some this takes the fun out of the game, since it takes away from the challenge of survival. You can compare it to a difficulty level question:.Easy: You want to enjoy the stories without the hassle of more often than not being on the edge of survival. That's what Sunless Sea is all about, right? The Ztories!. follow the link below and learn how.Hard: You want the challenge, the achievement when you finally buy your second ship, the cruel and harsh reality of the Unter Zee.

This story lives from the challenge!. This is it for you then. You managed to get enough Echoes to survive if you are clever and you are equipped with the knowledge to make your own discoveries. It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy.let's go exploring!.

The SurfaceThere's the key to riches. The world above the Unter Zee will be your ultimate ally.Getting to the is easy but expensive in Fuel and may take take a small toll on your Supplies and Zailors. You just have to travel South as soon as you leave Fallen London until you find the on the western shore. From there you can travel to the Surface for 22x Fuel and 2x Supplies. 24x Fuel and some Echoes (50 iirc) to get to Naples and then to Vienna which is useful. This means your Hold will be almost certainly full with the early ship when you decide to travel there.Once you are up there are 2 1/2 ways to make lots of Echoes. 12.1 The (limited) long legal wayThis is the least profitable way (only about 5-10% of the profits of the other ways), but also safe and doesn't involve much travel and thereby time and Fuel (besides the massive costs of getting to the Surface). It also requires the least initial Echo investment.

Note that this is a limited offer though and will end when you surpassed 300.Make sure you have at least 24x Fuel and 2x Supplies when you are at the Cumaean Canal, plus all Darkdrop Coffee Beans you can fit (buy them in Fallen London for 50e or find another port - prices go down as far as 38e/Sack).Travel to the Surface.Travel to Naples.(optional) Make a trip to the Mediterranean. You will lose 1-3 crew each time, but get 200-500e (380e on average) and some Fragments. The average cost per trip is 190e (150e for fuel, 10e for supplies, a little under 30e to replace crew at home), and the Fuel and Supplies can be bought in Naples. (Addition from ).Buy a train ticket to Vienna. There you can establish a business relation and sell the Darkdrop Coffee for 80e each, netting you 30e/bag.(optional) You can also help the Calender Council by carrying 1x back to Fallen London for them. This will give you much Fuel, Supplies and 1x (sells for 60e) back home.Repeat12.2a The much cooler illegal wayThis is the most profitable way, but requires some investment early on.

It's worth it though.Travel to Khan's Shadow (the black market next to the Khan's City from earlier).Acquire as many as you feel confident. They are very expensive with 250e each, but strong investment. Remember that you need at least 24x spaces of Hold later and enough Echoes left to buy Fuel and Supplies. I'd advice you to limit the Boxes to 10, maybe 12 with the first ship.Travel back to Fallen London to stack up on cheap Fuel, Supplies and Zailors or travel directly to the Cumaean Canal if you have enough Echoes left.Travel to the Surface.Fill your Empty Mirrorcatch Boxes with Sunlight.(optional) If you have the Fuel and Echoes you can also travel to Naples and then Vienna to help the Calender Council for Fuel, Supplies and 1x Crate of Human Souls back in London.Back to the Unter Zee and Fallen London. The Port Authority may want to search your ship when you arrive. Sunlight is illegal and you should use your Admiralty's Favours or bribes (500e) to get them to look the other way for this time. Alternatively, you can dock at a Port before Fallen London and 'use up' your Something awaits you quality which will prevent a search of your ship (among other occurances).

(Addition by ).If you still are in good standing with the Blind Bruiser you can now sell each of your to him for 400e each! (if you are not in good standing, follow 12.2b) The game notifies you that you could have gotten more on the but that is simply wrong.

You can get 500e there, but only if they screw you over and take the Box as well losing you 250e in investment. With the Blind Bruiser you always get your now Empty Mirrorcatch Boxes back.Repeat12.2b The illegal way and (probably) getting screwed overThis one is also profitable, but you have to travel more and do not make as much as with 12.2a. This is your only way if you somehow screwed up business with the Blind Bruiser since you can't sell Sunlight in Fallen London this way.Travel to Khan's Shadow (the black market next to the Khan's City from earlier).Acquire as many as you feel confident.

They are very expensive with 250e each, but strong investment. Remember that you need at least 24x spaces of Hold later and enough Echoes left to buy Fuel and Supplies. Pressing F is 75% higher speed, not 30%.

It's also double the fuel consumption rate for that fuel barrel. Doing this with the starter engine gets you speed comparable to the Compulsion for half the fuel consumption. The only refinement I'd add to the Sunlight run is that you can avoid both the Port Authority and the Blind Bruiser's annoying fetch missions if you sail into London with no Something Awaits You (i.e. Use it up at Mutton Island before full powering into London). You also get no Terror reduction, no Free Evenings (so no progress towards a Scion), and no Someone Wants to Sign On, but I think it's a fair exchange. Of article:In Germany, the Karneval or Fasching season officially begins in November the year before the Lenten season starts and culminates in the Rosenmontag Parade. The earliest written record of carnival in Germany dates back to 1296 in.

The first worldwide carnival parade took place in in 1823. The most active Carnival week begins on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, with parades being held during the weekend, and finishes the night before Ash Wednesday, with the main festivities occurring around Rosenmontag (Rose Monday).

This time is also called the 'Fifth Season'. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in certain cities, but in Germany there is no special name for that day.Interesting: Parent commenter can. Will also delete on comment score of -1 or less. This guide has been massively helpful. I started out barely scraping enough echoes to keep my crew fed, and after losing my first two captains I turned to the internet for help. Thanks to you I've got my own townhouse with a child on his way to being scion, along with a couple thousand echoes after a few trips to Salt Lions, and I'm looking to start shipping sunlight from the surface. I've found Khan's Shadow and picked up 3 boxes (what I could afford while still holding 200e and the hold space for the sphinxstone). My only concern is that every time I talk to the Blind Bruiser it seems he's got another errand to send me on.

First I had to take the crate of brilliant souls to Mt. Palmerston, now he wants me to pick up another crate from Gaider's Mourn. It was tough enough making the first delivery to a location I hadn't discovered, but now having returned by the skin of my teeth with only 1 fuel and 1 supply he's got me going to another undiscovered location. Do I need to finish this off before he'll accept boxes of sunlight? Is there any end to his requests? Also, there's a smiling woman here in London with an alternate proposition for my sphinxstone. I can't seem to find anything about this on the wiki and I'd be remiss to go out of my way for what turns out to be a less than stellar reward.

Any tips or guidance on how to proceed?. Glad to hear it!As far as I'm aware the constant jobs are the downside of the Blind Bruiser. It's just something you have to do and hope that it won't happen again for some time. And - yes - you have to do the his bidding in one trip. If you return home without having finished his mission he will have one last talk with you and then be gone. He does stop asking after some time though (at least that happened to me).

Not sure what the trigger was though. The Sphinxstones quest changes after you delivered a number of them. There's no harm in talking to her.:)edit: The reward for finishing the Sphinxstone quest is nice iirc. I tried to hint at it that you finish the quest at point 11. Oh, don't you worry about that. I decided to turn it in for the fast cash in London and go in search of Gaider's Mourn.

It's actually not too far from London on my map, and I was able to swing by Khan's Shadow to pick up 10 more mirrorcatch boxes. In a couple runs to the surface I should have enough to purchase and outfit the merchant ship. What engines/guns/etc would you recommend equipping on that boat?ninja edit: Blind Bruiser has me headed to Polythreme now, do you recommend picking up the We Are Clay Aux slot item, or is there something else better to equip there?.

Guns are pretty much useless if you only want to trade Sunlight since you won't be taking a fight anyway. For engines the fastest one you can easily get (at least if you have the Echoes) is the in Fallen London. In the late game the is the best one but it takes time and ressources to get it.Rather than We Are Clay I would recommend getting the when you have the merchant ship.

It allows you spend Fuel on Full Power to the Engines without the chance of your engines exploding, giving you a speed boost. I don't think echoes will be a problem any more. Got about 20k after my first run to the surface with my new merchant cruiser, Scion's Light. I've still got the first gun upgrade from my little rust bucket ( Basket o' Caskets) because I was tired of needing minor repairs from bat swarms, and before I heard back last night I went with the modest upgrade of the to go a bit faster. My only worry with the larger engines is that I've heard the fuel efficiency isn't as good so I would need to devote more space for that. The Blind Bruiser has me pretty regularly running out to Polythreme, which is in the 5th column on my map, and I'd like to be able to get to the surface before going back to see him.

With the largest engine in the shop I'm guessing that could take upward of 40 fuel, even with the Tireless Mechanic improving the efficiency. Speaking of, is his quest just unlocked with the dinner option when you speak?actually doesn't compete with the Suppressor, as they fit into Auxiliary while the Suppressor is an Aft-slot item. They seem cool because they cut down on the total crew needed to run at full power, thus decreasing supplies required, while boosting engine power themselves. The other options that fit Auxiliary are the Rat Sender, Torpedo Nets, and the Zong of the Zee.One more question: is there anything worthwhile to put in the bridge slot? It seems like the shops in London only have new lamps that go there, and only the most expensive come without a penalty to Veils.
