Mario Kart Wii (also called MKW, MKWii, Mario Kart 6, or MK6) is a multiplayer-oriented racing game for the Wii console, developed by Nintendo EAD. Usually, with each subsequent Mario Kart, there is an overwhelming amount of newness in each of them. However, this is sort of a smaller update than some may expect, especially coming from Double Dash.

But, the amount of new things in this game still makes it one of the best in the series, despite a few minor flaws. The gameplay is fantastic, especially with a Wii nun-chuck, the visuals, while not drastically better than Double Dash, are very colorful and have that Nintendo charm, the roster is the best it has ever been in a Mario Kart game, the tracks are all varied and are all fun to race on, the inclusion of single player battle mode and vs. Mode is just amazing and I'm more than happy to finally see more single player options, the music is fantastic, the new power-ups are pretty awesome, and the overall package is just phenomenal. This, in my opinion, does really feel like a step forward, as it is one of the most feature filled games in the series. However, that's not to say this game is perfect, as there are a few things that somewhat bothered me. Not enough to be deal breakers by any means, but enough to be worth noting. The item balancing, while it's not bad, is pretty wonky in this game, as some races, especially in 150cc, can sometimes go from being pleasant breezes to unfair nightmares in a drop of the hat.
It seems that everyone who's in the lower ranks have a huge advantage to take away your first place spot, which, to it's credit, does offer a fun challenge to experienced players, but I can see how this could put off some newcomers. The battle mode in this game is great for the most part, but I will admit and say it's a bit of a downgrade compared to Double Dash. Thankfully, the inclusion of it being single player as well in this game does make up for it a little bit, but still, the lack of being able to turn off the time or set up the rules like you could in Double Dash is a bit disappointing.
This doesn't make the mode bad by any means, as it's still a ton of fun, but it's not as robust as I was hoping. The visuals, while they're definitely not bad, are a bit identical to Double Dash in terms of detail. The only difference is that they're just a little shinier and there's a bloom effect throughout the whole game. It definitely doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look as great as one may expect it they were thinking of a next game after Double Dash 5 years later. So, overall, the main theme of the flaws in this game is just how minor they are. They don't really ruin the experience at all.
There are a few tiny things that could've been done differently, but really, they don't stop this from being a ton of fun, as this is still a classic in the series that should not be ignored, which is why I highly recommend it to those who have a Wii or backwards compatible Wii U (Ha! Yeah, right!), because this is still Mario Kart, and an amazing one at that.
