We agree with this as well. We believe getting people into the headset is an absolute must for any of our games. It's never the same as just watching it on screen or in a video. However, this came down to a being production issue. Releasing on Playstation, Oculus, and Steam while supporting PC, Mac, PSVR, Oculus, Vive, and WindowsMR was very difficult with such a small team and limited resources. Getting our music engine to run on PlayStation was a monumental undertaking for us.
Sony has a high bar for vetting products that go on their marketplace so all of our time was spent just getting it working. Combine that with getting over 40 tracks into the game, making a demo on the side just wasn’t possible for launch.
Hopefully, the price point, the quality bar set by our previous games, and the fact that we plan to support this by updating it with free music will make it more appealing to everyone. It's good you realize the importance of demos. I truly wish other developers would as well.
VR is so strange in the way that genre prefererences don't really apply as much as in other media.Of the three games you mentioned, despite them all being recommended by very many, only Raw Data is on my list of games to play. It's solely due to the demo.
The rest i'm steering away from as of now as i simply don't know if i would enjoy them, no matter how much people recommend them. The demos are a big thing. They really are. Played a couple times and had a lot of fun with it. Great work and thanks for being one of the top VR devs! Any plans to add the ability to play your own beats with kick, snare, bass, etc? Similar to how the Orbs work but you can throw in some solo beats?Glad your having fun with Electronauts so far! One of the largest goals with Electronauts is to give anybody the sensation of playing along to the beat (not creating the beat from scratch), this is one of the reasons that it feels so instantly fun to play.
We experimented with having specific drums (like a kick, snare, and cymbals) on orbs, but it generally speaking takes away from the fluid fun of Electronauts. An excellent middle ground for this are some songs have percussion based instruments to go along with the backing tracks! In the DJ shadow song for example, we have an awesome percussion instrument that you can use to create drum fills and breaks with. Here is a video of me playing with it!. Q1: We are discussing this internally, to see what the best opportunity would be. Stay tuned.Q2: Very interesting question. Its more challenging because talking about the product becomes more ambiguous.
Electronauts is somewhere between a tool, a toy and a game. So.how do you describe that? It also makes it more difficult to keep users engaged with a progression system.Q3: Another great question! I think yes, definitely. VR, AR, XR, MR, etc.
These will be used as new interface tech for DJs just like how DJs use touchscreens and laptops nowadays. The advantage is a more natural and flexible interface that is more fun to watch people play and can be augmented with real time tech (Music Reality Engine for example). It also combines well with a stage show and visualizer.
